daily dose of w

I quit drinking in 1986 and haven't had a drop since then. And it wasn't because of a government program, by the way -- in my particular case -- because I had a higher call.

S: Bita said "last call".

P: Keep the faith, bro. As Edgar Rice Burroughs' characters said in those cheesy Venus series of my wee youth: While I still live! That said, methinks I'm going to see if those people in Scotland know how to craft a beverage...

Venus series books. Venus series books. Prolly said it on Mars, too. And in Africa and England.

i enjoyed those Rice Burroughs books, John Carter was such a knucklehead. my own favorite moments were when the author would rail against modernism, something like this:

"these scaly lizards escorted John Carter to their city, if city was the right term. the palace that was its central feature looked like something a modernist had constructed in Chicago, Planet Earth, 1952 AD..."

i'm not sure why i think critiquing modern architecture via the building practices of imaginary aliens is funny, but there we go...
