Those of us who spent time in the agricultural sector and in the heartland, we understand how unfair the death penalty is---the death tax is. I don't want to get rid of the death penalty, just the death tax.

How many farms were "lost" to the estate tax? At what rate were they lost? How does this compare to real estate development and assimilation into large corporate farms?

But younger workers, in order to make sure the system exists tomorrow, younger workers ought to be able to take some of your own money and invest it in safe securities to get a better rate of return on that money.

In order for younger workers to buy into the notion of destroying social security as a Federal anti-poverty insurance program, we have to appeal to greed and the promise of the dot-com returns like those realized by my friends, like Ken "Kenny Boy" Lay.

Today when I landed, I met a fellow named Irving Hall. Where are you, Irving? Right there -- stand up. Now you can sit down. Irving Hall works for our government at the laboratories, the high tech -- Sandia -- I think you worked there, didn't you, Irving? Yes. He worked there, and came time to retire and his boss said, what are you going to do, Irving? He said, why don't you make a difference -- I believe that's what your boss told me -- what you told me your boss said. See, he met me at the airplane. I'd never met Irving before.

I'm also honored to be here with the Speaker of the House -- just happens to be from the state of Illinois. I'd like to describe the speaker as a trustworthy man. He's the kind of fellow who says when he gives you his word he means it. Sometimes that doesn't happen all the time in the political process.
