Eagle-eyed Kyoto foe Jeff Harmon spotted Kyoto protest beaten back by inflamed petrol traders in The Times Online. If you are going to be an environmental activist, there are a couple of things you'll want to do before heading off to the WTO protest. The first is get acquainted with the conservation of energy, conservation of mass, and conservation of momentum, with maybe a dash of economics thrown in. A very nice framework for analysing these things is that of Odum's eMergy Evaluation. The second thing is to master gung fu. It's really embarassing to have your ass handed to you by a liquored-up petroleum trader, especially when it was you that picked the fight.
While global climate change is a very real and pressing problem, Kyoto is deeply flawed, and might even be counter productive. I'm skeptical of the differential treatment of developing and developed countries. Jeff is well suited to expound upon this...

George is right that I'm a Kyoto Foe. It is basically a mugging of the US where we are asked to turn our backs so that thugs may beat us about the head and shoulders.
But I'd rather focus on just the pure mayhem of the IPE Row. It recalls a time in our heritage when unwelcome meddling would get you rumbled out the door, worse for the wear. A preference for democracy coupled with the tendency for quick and righteous violence is one of the reasons the nordic bloodline has been so successful in the world. Does anyone think the Demmy vikings of old would have tolerated a disruption of the sheep market in days of yore? NO! You would have gotten a blood eagle for your trouble.
So, here's to the bower boys of the IPE, for defending their turf and expressing themselves, righteously. A little rough up every now and then does society good.
Ahhh... the blood eagle. Time was that I could pull that off bare handed. Now I need my trusty, beloved santoku.
