With all the years I spent in Hogtown, I never made it out there. Maybe I need to road-trip it on down there and annoy the locals as yet another goddamn gatornational tourist.

go g go. try it. you'll luv it. the link in your post does it no justice. truely one of the most amazing things i've ever seen.

check out the starting line.i guarantee that your first reaction will be.....to laugh in amazement. its so absurd and dangerous. the sound literally forces your the air out of your lungs. bring ear plugs. the nitro methane burns your nose, eyes and throat and you love every second of it. the cars sit there and suddenly disappear before your very eyes. never thought that you were a speed freak? you're gonna be.

you can wander around the pits. and watch the guys ENTIRELY rebuild the car between heats. they regrind the clutch plates, they straighten every valve.......

if for nothing else it is amazing to watch b/c its a bunch of people in pursuit of excellence. which is something that we should all appreciate. they have just decided thaat their gig is to drive a quarter mile as fast as possible.

besides a pro surf competition, it is one of the best gatherings of people that i have ever been to. everyone was there to enjoy. i remember talking to a cop there and he was like 'yeah, i'd much prefer to work this than a gator game. no drunk a-holes here.'

I know that I'd love the gatornationals, and I'd really love to go with my dad. He used to be a gear head -- had an Austin Healy 100S with a 327 that finished a quarter mile at around 120 MPH, if I recall, and sub 12 seconds. Nothing compared to top fuel, of course.

It's sad that my memories of GN was of that of the ignorant local. GN just meant that I wasn't going to get a table at Leonardo's 706 that Saturday night.

Note to self: Gator Nationals in 2006.
